From Dairy Farm to Dallas Charm
06/30/2011 by Danielle Boling
The epitome of charm - winding roads, hilly topography, and even some cliffs. A sense of serenity will envelope your very being, and calm will set in as you enter the neighborhood. “Eclectic” and “trendy” are terms often used to describe the area known as Bluffview in Dallas. Bounded by Midway Road on the west, Lovers Lane on the south, Northwest Highway on the north, and the Devonshire neighborhood on the east - Bluffview is truly one of Dallas’ best kept secrets.
Perhaps what is even more interesting than the majestic curb appeal of tree-lined streets and historic estate homes, is the fact that this slice of heaven is not flat, like most surrounding areas. The reason for this is that in 1924, a developer by the name of John P. Stevens bought a 215-acre dairy farm and turned it into one-acre lots along the cliffs of Bachman Creek. Some of these cliffs are 50 feet above the water. Stevens Park in Oak Cliff is the namesake for this developer, as he is responsible for it as well.
Bluffview is comprised of Shorecrest Estates, Northwest Hills, Inwood Terrace, Inwood Park Estates, and Cochran Chapel. Each of these pockets has its own distinctive charm, be it the streams and ravines lacing the neighborhoods, or the period homes that have been meticulously restored to awesome perfection.
On any given weekend, one can take a leisurely drive down the streets of Bluffview and be greeted by the welcoming hand waves of strolling families with pampered pets or baby carriages taking in the ambiance. A true sense of arrival will consume its visitors and it will soon become readily apparent as to why it is one of the most coveted areas of town.
After touring the homes, one can indulge in a quick mosey over to Celebration Station restaurant, where the portions are heaping and the staff is incredibly friendly. Inwood Village shopping center is five minutes south of Bluffview, and offers a wonderful array of rare boutiques including Rich Hippie and Haute Baby.
